A CLOSER LOOK

The story behind it.

Kirk Gibson’s pinch-hit home run turns a ninth-inning deficit into an unforgettable Dodgers victory.

A pinch hitter changes the ending

Kirk Gibson, limited by injuries, entered in the ninth inning against Dennis Eckersley and hit the game-winning home run. The appearance was his only one in that World Series.

A broadcast that leaves room

Vin Scully’s call lets the crowd fill a long interval after the home run. The sound of the stadium becomes part of how the moment is remembered.
